Living in terror as rapist cop walks free

By Bill Hicks
A SCOTTISH community is living in fear of the impending release of a convicted sexual predator and one terrified victim has been re-housed for her own protection.
Former Dumfries and Galloway police inspector Adam Carruthers — jailed in 2001 for raping two women — is expected to be freed within weeks.

Wave of fear
Carruthers has had his sentence automatically cut by a third, sending a wave of fear through south-west Scotland, where he was also investigated for attacks on at least 20 other women. It is believed one victim has already been moved by police and her new home placed under the tightest possible security, including the installation of CCTV cameras.

Another victim, speaking exclusively and anonymously to The Sunday Post, has told of her fears of Carruthers’ return as well as giving disturbing insights into the disgraced former cop’s behaviour towards her.Carruthers will be monitored while on licence but his victims fear he may strike again. In 2001 former Dumfries and Galloway Police Inspector Adam Carruthers was jailed for 12 years for the rape of two women.Carruthers, whose crimes were committed while he was a sergeant at Langholm, has had his sentence automatically cut by a third and is expected to be freed within weeks.

Around 20 women had complained of sex attacks during his time at Dumfries and Galloway police. Helen Hughes reported him in the early 1990s but later killed herself. Friends claim she was in despair at not being taken seriously. He was only brought to justice after detectives from Lothian and Borders police were drafted in.
