A DEMONSTRATION was staged outside Dumfries Sheriff Court yesterday as shamed former police inspector Adam Carruthers began an action for the reinstatement of his full pension.
The 46-year-old father-of-two, who was jailed for 12 years in June 2001Šfor raping two women and committing other offences in the Langholm area while in uniform, had his pension reduced by 65 per cent by Dumfries and Galloway police authority.
When he was released from jail last September — his sentence had been reduced to 11 years on appeal — he began his legal action to regain his pension.
But he did not appear at the court where the small group of women and men protesters held up placards with slogans such as:
“Paid to protect us or paid to rape us?” and “NO to rape tax”.
Forfeiture could be either permanent or temporary, full or in part and it was recommended that no more than 65 per cent be docked.
The committee also had before them a submission on behalf of Carruthers which stated he had an exemplary career record with no disciplinary proceedings against him and was described by his immediate superior as a good officer. (except for raping 38 women while on duty!)
